about

"Released after the band’s reformation in 2001, “Trading Sirens” compiles all previous Static Rituals releases (minus the Problems With My Head single), some outtakes, b-sides and a few new songs. It also trades on the bands newfound local celebrity status in the Toledo music scene by featuring a radio interview with the band. If you haven’t checked out Static Rituals before, this is your ticket to the ground floor. If you already own the main releases it’s still worth getting for the new songs: “By Means Of An Electrolytic Process” is a punk scorcher in the vein of old-school Static Rituals; “Ritualistic Invasion” will be familiar to all purveyors of their live set as it’s the show closer; and M Short's “I Can, I Cannot” gets an excellent recording here with drums courtesy of Gone Daddy Finch’s Tommy “No-Tone” Grzybowski. Some of the newer songs showcase the bands different inspirations: “andiwontputupafight” coming in at the pop end of the spectrum with hauntingly beautiful vocals harkens back to Brett’s previous band, Dollhouse. While “whose navigational pull?/all-american boy” sounds more like something M Short would release with Device. Whether these are one-offs or showcase a new direction for the band remains to be seen.
With any compilation you are going to get some filler. In this case “duo sonic (installment I)” and “unshakably calm and collected” can probably be skipped. But with so many of these songs essential to the Static Rituals catalog (“ Hey Little Girl” and “Please Help My Friend Radar”) you are bound to find something that tickles your sonic fancy."
